This method produces a monochrome image.
Open the greyscale image you wish to colorize.
For a GIF image:
Adjust - Color Balance - Red/Green/Blue
or
any other color adjustment you want to use.
Now you can adjust the color to anything you want.
Next Export - Gif Optimizer
On the Transparency tab select: Exisiting image transparency
On the Partial Transparency tab select:
Use error difussion dither
and select No for "use existing image color at 100% opacity"
Click OK and save the image.
Using this method the image will retain its transparency although the background color (the color that you don't see) will be different.
For a JPG image:
If you do not want the background to be colorized you will need to use the magic wand select all the background.
If you want a different color background now is the time to fill it with the new color.
Then Selections - Invert.
Now you can colorize the image anyway you want.
When it is like you want it save it in the format you desire.
